Hynfra and the Mauritanian company Mauritania Green Ammonia are initiating a large-scale project to build a green hydrogen and ammonia installation together with the Government of Mauritania
On March 4, the Ministry of Petroleum, Mining and Energy of Mauritania signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Polish-Mauritian consortium, which includes Hynfra and Mauritania Green Ammonia (MGA). The initiated cooperation aims to launch an installation for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia. This initiative is part of the country’s ambitious plans to achieve a leading position in the production and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives by 2030. The project’s contractors will focus on using Mauritania’s rich natural resources, including solar and wind energy potential, to produce hydrogen and ammonia in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. The project envisages not only production goals, but also creating the basis for the development of the local economy, increasing employment opportunities and strengthening Mauritania’s position as a leader in the field of green energy technologies. The planned project will make Mauritania one of the first African countries to produce and use green hydrogen. This will contribute to the development of the domestic industry of clean chemicals, such as e-fuels or green fertilizers. The installation has the potential to meet national and subregional demand for products that have so far been imported, expensive and have a high carbon footprint. – says Nani Ould Chrougha, Minister of Petroleum, Mining and Energy of Mauritania. The project envisages the construction of installations with a total capacity of electrolyzers from 120 to 200 MW and renewable energy sources with a capacity of up to 500 MW, which will enable the production of approximately 100,000 tons of green ammonia per year. In the context of the concluded agreement, Hynfra and Mauritania Green Ammonia have formed a consortium to jointly implement the project. I am equally proud and honored to have signed today’s MoU. This project gives us a huge distinction on the decarbonization map of the world. It is becoming one of the key elements of Mauritania’s energy strategy. Thanks to the experience of Hynfra and MGA, combined with the ideal climatic conditions of Mauritania, we have the opportunity to develop the implementation of a green energy project on a very large scale. – says Tomoho Umeda, president of Hynfra and co-founder of Mauritania Green Ammonia. Under this agreement, the Ministry of Petroleum, Mining and Energy of Mauritania has granted the consortium priority access to a specific research area, which consists of 10 square kilometers of land located in the southern zone of the Somelec wind farm. The total cost of development and construction of the installation is estimated at approximately 1.5 billion United States dollars (“USD”). The project also envisages the development of a certified green industrial zone enabling companies to operate in an emission-free energy ecosystem. The relations between Hynfra and the Mauritanian government were initiated by the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH), as its representative, Jan Bochniak, says – At the beginning of 2023, Tomoho Umeda presented Hynfra’s offer to me and turned to the PAIH Foreign Trade Office in Casablanca with a request for help in promoting Hynfra’s business model and finding a suitable business partner in the region. Since then, we have held a number of meetings and, after many months of efforts, the Polish-Mauritanian company Mauritania Green Ammonia SARL was established. It is a great success that today we are returning from Nouakchott full of optimism regarding the prospects for cooperation in the construction of a green hydrogen and its derivatives factory in Mauritania. The MOU signed today will represent a huge milestone in this strategic endeavor.Hynfra PSA specializes in the development of green hydrogen projects in Poland and worldwide, with extensive experience and recognized technical and operational competences. The company cooperates with local governments, industrial and chemical entities. Mauritania Green Ammonia Sarl is a subsidiary of Hynfra. It was established in 2023 to develop green ammonia installations globally, with a particular focus on the potential of the Northwest African market.
